Water Baptism
Water baptism is a ceremony that symbolizes the beginning of our spiritual lives. It is a way to publicly say goodbye to our life outside of Christ (Romans 6:1-4). It is an outward sign of an inward event.
Who is eligible for baptism?
The New Testament consistently speaks of water baptism in the context of a saving faith in Christ (Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38). Only those who have committed their lives to Christ are to be baptized.
When does water baptism save me?
Water Baptism can never save a person. Biblical faith is not one based on the performance of certain religious acts or ceremonies (Ephesians 2:8-9; Galatians 2:21-3:3). By participating in certain acts (e.g. baptism, the Lord’s supper, confirmation, penance, anointing of the sick, ordination, and marriage) we receive grace, regardless of whether or not the person has an active, personal faith. Water Baptism is an outward expression of inward faith.
Why should I be baptized?
We believe that water baptism is one of the two ordinances or commands (the Lord’s supper being the other) given to the church by Christ. Several key passages are important in understanding our need to be baptized in water:
It is commanded of all believers: Matthew 28:19, Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38
It is a symbolic way to publicly participate in the death and resurrection of Christ:
Romans 6:1-4
